Leo Charles Spedderi Dougherty's Grandfather James Spedderi was born in Malta in 1832 arriving in Naseby diggings in 1863. He prospected on Rough Ridge (Gimmerburn area) in a deep gorge which he named after Italian revolutionary leader Guiseppe Garabaldi. Garabaldi had been an idealistic leader of the Italian uniforcation between 1848 and 1860 and had earlier fought in liberation movements in South America together with his wife Anita.
Hense the name Garabaldi Gorge which is on Garrawaye property. A Goldminer Neil Davidson built his hut at the base of the gorge this is where we are fossicking this day in 1995. Many a lovely time the Dougherty Family has had having picnics, goldpanning, swimming, lobstering and picking gooseberries. Leo especially had a liking of the wild gooseberries.
